Summary
Japan underwent many changes under the impact of old and new culture during the Meiji Restoration period. For the Japanese nation, the crisis was also a turning point. They used exquisite traditional skills in artistic creation and developed a higher level of artistic expression. The 126 pieces of artworks in this exhibition include metalwork, articulated animal (jizai okimono), sculpture, lacquerware, cloisonné enamelware (shippo-yaki), porcelains and ceramics, velvet, etc. The era spans from the late Edo period to the early Showa period. Some of the artworks are from the Japanese imperial craftsmen and other famous masters, and are both delicacy of traditional skills and innovative color. They surpasses ordinary people's stereotyped impression of handicrafts, sublimating from "technique" to "art", fully demonstrating the beauty of Meiji art.
